Radium Inputs Into the Arctic Ocean From Rivers: A Basin‐Wide Estimate

نویسندگان

چکیده

Radium isotopes have been used to trace nutrient, carbon, and metal fluxes inputs from ocean margins. However, these approaches require a full accounting of radium sources the coastal including rivers. Here, we aim quantify river into Arctic Ocean for first time 226Ra refine estimates 228Ra. Using new existing data, find that estimated combined (dissolved plus desorbed) annual 228Ra are [7.0–9.4] × 1014 dpm y−1 [15–18] y−1, respectively. Of totals, 44% 60% 228Ra, respectively suspended sediment desorption, which were laboratory incubation experiments. Ra isotope data 20 major rivers around world, derived global [7.4–17] 1015 [15–27] As climate change spurs rapid warming, hydrological cycles intensifying ice cover permafrost diminishing. These will serve as valuable baseline attempt understand changes warming temperatures having on biogeochemically important elements zone.

Marine pollution. Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean.

Plastic debris in the marine environment is widely documented, but the quantity of plastic entering the ocean from waste generated on land is unknown. By linking worldwide data on solid waste, population density, and economic status, we estimated the mass of land-based plastic waste entering the ocean. We calculate that 275 million metric tons (MT) of plastic waste was generated in 192 coastal ...

Glimpses of Arctic Ocean shelf–basin interaction from submarine- borne radium sampling

Evidence of shelf-water transfer from temperature, salinity, and Ra/Ra sampling from the nuclear submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers SCICEX cruise in October, 2000 demonstrates the heterogeneity of the Arctic Ocean with respect to halocline ventilation. This likely reflects both time-dependent events on the shelves and the variety of dispersal mechanisms within the ocean, including boundary currents...

Basinwide Integrated Volume Transports in an Eddy-Filled Ocean

The temporal evolution of the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in the subtropical North Atlantic is affected by both remotely forced, basin-scale meridionally coherent, climaterelevant transport anomalies, such as changes in high-latitude deep water formation rates, and locally forced transport anomalies, such as eddies or Rossby waves, possibly associated with...

Allochthonous inputs of riverine picocyanobacteria to coastal waters in the Arctic Ocean.

The observed onset of climate change at high northern latitudes has highlighted the need to establish current baseline conditions in the Arctic Ocean, and has raised concern about the potential for the invasion and growth of biota that have warm temperature optima, such as cyanobacteria. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequences as a molecular marker to evaluate the hypothesis that Arctic ...

The Arctic Ocean Spices Up

The contemporary Arctic Ocean differs markedly from midlatitude, ice-free, and relatively warm oceans in the context of density-compensating temperature and salinity variations. These variations are invaluable tracers in the midlatitudes, revealing essential fundamental physical processes of the oceans, on scales from millimeters to thousands of kilometers. However, in the cold Arctic Ocean, te...
